Got Water?
Most people, when they think of preparation, think of foodstuffs and equipment. But if you don't have a store of water, things can get tight rather quickly.
I imagine there are several ways to prepare for a water shortage. This is the way I've prepared after considering the pluses and minuses of various stratagems. Potable water. 10 Scepter 04933 W520 5.3 gal./ 20L "Jeep Style" Water Cans This allows for 50 gallons of water, each treated with a bit of unscented chlorine bleach. I know many people will go with the large 55 gallon water barrels but I was adverse to this as they are NOT portable. Some people like glass containers which are impermeable to petroleum and pesticide fumes. But glass containers can be fragile. Pick your scenario according to your circumstances. The general rule is 1 gallon of potable water per person per day. Water, given its weight and bulk is generally a difficult thing to store for many people. As I live in a rain forest, a two week supply of potable water is acceptable given my circumstances. If things get protracted we have a couple of springs I can collect water from using the 5 gallon water cans. Non-Potable water is needed for...for flushing the toilet if nothing else. After a couple days without water, being able to flush a toilet is not something to under-rate! For our purposes we have a rain barrel attached to one of our gutter drains. It keeps the rain barrel full most of the time. The water cans we have can be seen at http://www.calssportingarmory.com/Sc...p/sce04933.htm but they were ordered at http://www.bargainboatparts.com/p-10...ontainers.aspx as they were priced a bit cheaper. Incidently, if you don't have water, don't eat food as it will dehydrate you. |

Re: Got Water?
Your water heater is another source of 40-80 gallons of clean, treated drinking water. If you have the room, run two in tandem (and also save on heating costs).
